DESCRIPTION

Guitar Insights ~ Get in the Groove

One of the most exciting things about guitar is that we can play chords and rhythm. Guitar is one of the very few instruments on the planet that can play more than one note at the same time!

Groove Guitar Course ~ April 2024

Before there were guitar gods known for their single note, lead solos the guitar was considered part of the rhythm section with the bass and drums.

Inspiring listeners to get up and dance with your guitar playing alone because you have a solid groove is a fabulous, fun result when you learn about controlling your pick, time, pocket, groove and how to place your strums within the tempo. I’ve been in love with guitar since I’m two years old when I received a plastic guitar for Christmas. The Beatles happened and my future was born. I received a better plastic guitar every Christmas, and real guitar lessons started when I was nine years old. I studied out of great books with and excellent teacher, Lou Sabini.

I started writing songs and playing with tape recorders soon after and I fell in love with  sound, chords, and melodies.

I was a performance major at Berklee College of Music and graduated in 1982. I joined the guitar faculty in 1984. I started the first Beatle playing classes at Berklee: The Beatles’ Guitar Lab, and The Beatles’ Ensemble, that later became The Beatles’ Recording Ensemble. I also started Berklee’s Pop/Rock Guitar Lab, Songwriting Guitar Lab and I am planning a new course, The Guitarist-Songwriter-Producer Guitar Lab for Berklee’s guitar dept.

I love playing rhythm guitar, playing lead guitar and playing slide guitar; strumming with a pick, with a hybrid technique of pick & fingers, and fingerpicking. I love writing songs and playing in alternate tunings. I play acoustic, electric, solid bodies, archtop guitars, semi hollow guitars, any guitar! And you can bring any guitar you like to our class meetings.

I have taught over 10,000 students at Berklee alone. It’s exciting for me to connect with like minded, passionate guitar lovers who desire too grow and build their skills.

FAQ

Do I need a guitar to join this class?

No. You can watch the videos and enjoy the handouts, and attend the classes each week without a guitar. You will always have the materials and you will gain insights by listening and watching other players.

What if I’m a complete beginner?

That’s great. You are welcome to join us. May you get super inspired and find a hunger rise in you to jump in the materials with gusto that will propel you to begin. Plus you’ll be getting my Guitar Essentials video course that explains the physical hand training you need to play guitar well. It’s an excellent resource to have as you begin guitar, along with my two Guitar Insights ebooks with tips and ideas for a healthy mindset to insure your success.

Should I bring an acoustic guitar or electric guitar to our zoom class?

Bring any guitar you love playing to our zoom class meetings.

Do I need headphones or an interface or a microphone setup?

Nope. You don’t even need an amp. If you set your zoom settings to “for musicians” and keep the sound suppression low, we will be able to hear you and the sound won’t cut out.

What if I am an intermediate or advanced guitar player?

Rhythm guitar playing is so overlooked and overshadowed. Often a guitarist’s fretting hand is much more developed than their picking hand. It is so essential and the ability to really play rhythm guitar well, greatly improves your lead guitar playing skills because your time, phrasing, feel, and your understanding will deepen from everything you practice when you play great materials with mindfulness. Your whole playing world opens up. I’m sure some of these rhythms, songs and chords will be new to you.

Will there be time to focus on each person’s playing?

Yes. I will listen to each player who wishes to play. You will be heard and guided. I will answer all of your questions and you will feel welcomed in a fun, engaging, collaborative environment.

What if I don’t want to play for everybody or be live on zoom?

No problem. This is for FUN. There is no shame, or should already be, this is to enjoy and improve. Everything will be on Vimeo and you can watch the teaching videos and class zoom videos on your own, and go through this course at your own pace anytime you’re hungry for it because you will always have access to watch them all over & over again.

How and when do we meet?

We will meet on zoom over 6 Saturday mornings EST starting Jan. 20, 27, Feb 3, 10, 17, 24 2024. The zoom link will be the same for each class and you will receive it in an email from me on Sundays with the teaching video announcement plus links and every Saturday before our live class time.

How and when will I receive the class materials?

Each week I will email you on Sunday with these things:

  1. A teaching video that explains the week’s lesson
  2. A how to video with tips and specific techniques
  3. Handouts with resources, exercises, chord forms and the song we will be playing

What if I don’t read music?

You’re in the majority. Most people do not read music. I will be sharing handouts with universal guitar notation containing chord boxes, guitar tab, musical notation, chord symbols, and all the handouts are in English.
